A Bit More About Patio Doors

As mentioned in our introduction, installing a patio door should not be attempted by someone with no past experience in renovation projects. Several parts of this project are interconnected, which means strong attention to detail is key. All glass sliding doors work in a similar way: one opens to provide access to the outdoors, while the other remains fixed. The door opens using a track installed along the bottom of the door frame or jamb. In most cases, your door frame will be made of wood or fibreglass.

We briefly mentioned that there are different types of doors on the market. The most popular patio door is one that is fully glazed, offering a clear view of the outdoors. Several modern styles are available as alternatives to standard designs, including doors with patterned glass or even French door–style models. Another element to consider is whether you want to add a screen to go with the glass—an excellent way to let fresh air in without letting insects inside.

Once you’ve made your decision, there are several things to keep in mind before buying. First, make sure you’ve taken measurements of your existing door so the new one will be the right size. If there’s no door in place and only an opening, do the same and record the dimensions carefully. In most cases, a patio door kit will include a frame that needs to be built around the door.

If you’re unsure about the installation process, it’s best to ask a friend to help you with this project. That’s especially important since the glass door will be very heavy, and you’ll need help getting it into place. Now, let’s look at the steps involved in the process.

Gather Your Materials and Get Started!

Now that you’ve chosen a brand, a model, and carefully taken the measure of the existing door or opening, it’s time to begin. The next step is to gather the materials and tools needed for the job. You’ll need the following:

  • 4-in-1 screwdrivers

  • A hammer

  • A nail gun

  • A level

  • Pliers

  • A drill and driver

  • A mitre saw

  • A reciprocating saw

  • A table saw

  • A  tape measure

  • A utility knife

  • A pry bar

Once you’ve gathered your tools and have your door kit ready, you’re set to begin the installation. Start by finishing any exposed wood before installing the door. This will save you time later, as finishing the wood after the door is in place is much more difficult. It’s important to note that there may be a gap between the door and the exterior trim—but don’t worry. If you have an old door with trim attached to the frame, remove it.

However, if there is no trim and the siding goes right up to the frame, you may need to remove and reinstall the siding after the door is installed—otherwise, leaks could occur. If your interior or exterior walls are stucco or brick, you’ll likely need to rely on caulking to hold the door in place securely. One final note before starting: begin this project early in the day to increase your chances of finishing before nightfall.

Remove the Old Door and Frame

If you’re removing an old patio door, take out the panels one by one, as they will likely be heavy. Remove any trim as needed, and then remove the siding and glass panels. This can usually be done by unscrewing the wooden strip at the top of the door.

Tilt the panel and remove the bottom rollers from the track. Then, lift the panel up vertically and take it out when possible. Removing the fixed panel is usually harder, as it may be stuck in place. If you find securing brackets at the top or bottom, these will need to be removed. Then the panel should slide toward the lock and can be taken out. If it’s stuck and depending on how badly, use a utility knife or saw to cut through the paint or beads of caulk.

Apply Flexible Waterproof Flashing

Next, apply flexible waterproof flashing to the bottom of the door frame. The area where your door will be installed should always be level, but double-check before proceeding. Remove any debris or dust to make sure the surface is clean. Apply the flashing directly under the door sill, wrapping it up the sides of the opening about two inches.

Most flexible flashing has an adhesive backing. If the top of your frame isn’t protected, flashing should be added there too. Do not screw it in! Even if it doesn’t stick perfectly, fit it in place as best you can.

Install Your New Patio Door!

For this step, you’ll definitely need help. Ask a friend or family member to help you put the new patio door into place. Have someone stand outside while you continue working from inside. Make sure the door is level and plumb by checking all four sides. Insert shims every 6 inches, and be careful not to force them in, as that could split the jambs. Once the door is properly set, make sure it slides smoothly.

Now, from outside the house, screw into the frame and the house structure. From the inside, drive finishing nails into the door jambs, placing one near each shim. If needed, add interior trim near the existing wall to check for any gaps. Finally, you’ll need to seal the door. This can be done using caulking rated for outdoor use. It’s especially important to prevent rainwater from leaking in.

To Sum Up, Here’s What to Remember About Installing a Patio Door

Installing a patio door can transform a space by bringing in natural light and providing outdoor access, but it does require some renovation experience. Before getting started, it’s crucial to choose the right door model (full-glass, patterned, French-style, etc.), take accurate measurements, and gather all necessary tools (saws, drill, screwdriver, level, etc.). The project begins by preparing the opening, finishing exposed wood, and—if needed—removing the old door and frame. It’s also important to check the state of the exterior cladding, especially if it’s stucco or brick, to avoid leaks.

Once the opening is ready, flexible flashing is installed for waterproofing, and the new door is set in place using shims for support. Make sure the door is level and working properly before securing it with screws and finishing nails. After installation, be sure to apply quality exterior caulking to prevent water infiltration. While an experienced DIYer can complete the project in a day or over a weekend, it’s always a good idea to have help—especially since the glass panels can be very heavy.

Patio Door FAQs

Adjusting a sliding patio door: how do you do it?

To adjust a patio door, you generally need to tweak the rollers located at the bottom of the door. Using a screwdriver, locate the adjustment screws (usually hidden behind plastic caps at the base of the door) and turn them to raise or lower the door. This will align it properly on the track and make it glide more smoothly. A proper adjustment also improves the seal.

How can I keep my patio door from freezing in winter?

To prevent your patio door from freezing, make sure the weatherstripping is in good condition and reduce indoor condensation. Here are a few tips:

  • Use weatherstripping around the frame

  • Dehumidify your indoor air

  • Clean the tracks regularly to avoid water or ice buildup

  • Apply silicone-based lubricant to the tracks

How do you remove and replace a sliding glass patio door (DIY)?

Removing a patio door requires care, especially if it’s glass. Here are the basic steps:

  • Remove the sliding panel by lifting it out of the track (after loosening the rollers)

  • Remove any screws or safety fasteners

  • Take off the interior and/or exterior trim

  • Use a pry bar to remove the fixed frame, starting from the sides

If the door is heavy or hard to remove, calling a professional is a good idea.

Should you choose a left- or right-opening patio door?

The opening direction of a patio door is determined from the inside. If the sliding part is on the left and moves to the right, it’s a left-hand opening. If it’s on the right and slides to the left, it’s a right-hand opening. Choose based on your room layout and traffic flow.

What's the average cost to install a sliding patio door?

In Quebec, the cost of installing a patio door generally ranges from $800 to $2,500, depending on the type of door, its size, and the complexity of the installation. This price usually includes labour and materials but may increase if structural changes are needed.

What needs to be installed if you have a dog?

If you have a dog, it’s a good idea to install a pet door or pet panel in your patio door so your dog can come and go easily without compromising your home’s security or insulation.

Can you install a security system on a patio door?

Yes, you can install a security system on a patio door. Specific sensors for sliding doors are available and can be integrated into your home alarm system to effectively secure this entry point.
