As of 12:01 a.m. on May 28, a strike is affecting parts of the residential construction sector in Quebec. This action stems from a breakdown in negotiations between the union alliance (Alliance syndicale) and the Association of Construction and Housing Professionals of Quebec (APCHQ), despite several enhanced offers from the employer side.
That said, not all construction sites are shut down, some workers have chosen to continue working, which is a fully protected legal right. So, the strike does not mean a complete shutdown of the industry.
Your Rights and Workers’ Rights Are Protected
In the context of a strike, several safeguards are in place to protect both clients and workers:
Working conditions from the expired collective agreement remain in force until a new one is signed.
No employer can force a worker to perform duties during the strike.
No union can stop a worker who wishes to continue working.
Union representatives are not allowed to organize meetings on job sites without the employer’s consent.
In other words, your renovation work can move forward within the framework of the law, while respecting workers’ rights and professional commitments.
A Clear Intention to Resolve the Dispute Quickly
The APCHQ has made multiple efforts to avoid the strike, including tabling an enhanced offer with an 18% wage increase, featuring a 5% raise in the first year. Though this offer was rejected, the APCHQ is now proposing mediation-arbitration - a neutral, regulated process that could help resolve the conflict efficiently.
Discussions are continuing in a respectful manner, with a clear commitment from both sides to reach a sustainable agreement.

If your project is already underway, contact your contractor for an update on your specific site. In many cases, work is continuing as planned.
If you’re about to begin your renovation, know that many contractors are still operating, and potential delays will vary depending on region and available personnel.
If you’re in the planning phase, you can still move ahead with your design, quotes, and materials selection — you’ll be well prepared when full operations resume, if needed.
