Wakefield Bridge: Eco-Friendly Steel Shingles

If you're looking to either replace your aging roofing or build a new home, a steel (metal) roof can be a great investment. It's rather low maintenance compared to other options, keeps your home cooler during the summer months, and protects against harsh weather like wind, rain, hail, etc.

Metal roofs have been used for centuries on residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural buildings. Not only are they beautiful and eye-catching, but they also offer unmatched durability. Should you choose this type of roofing material, know that Wakefield Bridge steel shingles are highly rated!

Wakefield Bridge: Shingle Features

Wakefield Bridge steel shingles are manufactured from recycled and new steel—making them more environmentally friendly than other types of metal roofing materials, if not all types of roofs. Unlike conventional asphalt shingles made from fossil fuels, the cost of these steel shingles isn’t impacted by global oil price fluctuations.

Furthermore, the steel shingles are installed directly on the roof covering. The top section on the shingle is secured and the bottom interlocks with either the previous shingle or the eave trim. As such, they mesh with one another, giving the system all the structure it needs to withstand extreme winds. So, if you’re one of those who plan on living in the same house for a long time, it’s definitely the type of roofing material that will most appeal to you.

This type of shingle is reliable and designed to keep your property weatherproof for decades. Plus, for those who know a thing or two about shingles, they have a Freeze, Hail, Rain, and Ice Rating = UL 2218 Class 4; Wind (and wind-driven rain) Rating = TAS100, Fire Tests Rating = Class A (ASTM E108), and more.

Benefits of Wakefield Bridge Shingles

Wakefield Bridge steel shingles are the most fire-resistant roofing material on the market due to their non-combustible nature. Therefore, if you live in a fire-prone area, where forest fires are frequent every year, metal roofing should be on your list of materials to consider.

Roofing experts claim that said roofing material withstands winds of up to 225 km/hour. And, Canada is well-known for its major weather conditions: extreme winter temperature variations followed by harsh summer heat, both of which can ultimately damage roofing and cause water infiltration.

Wakefield Bridge steel shingles are at least 50% lighter and stronger than concrete and clay tiles, asphalt and cedar shingles. Under extreme weather conditions, they won't curl, crack, or break.

Unlike asphalt shingles, Wakefield Bridge shingles aren’t affected by mould or fungal growth. They’re also resistant to damage caused by squirrels, termites, and other pests/rodents. The initial roofing cost is higher than alternatives, but its durability will pay off in the long run.

This type of roofing material is available in a variety of colours, textures, and finishes, all designed to withstand the elements. It also has the latest UV protection technology.

Although asphalt shingles absorb radiant heat, steel has physical properties that allow heat from outside (during summer) or inside (during winter) to bounce off the roof panels. In other words, your air conditioner doesn't have to work overtime to retain ambient temperatures, as with your heating system to maintain the warmth.

One of the environmental benefits of this roofing material is that it can be installed over existing roofing, which reduces installation time and cuts down on the overall waste. Manufacturing Wakefield Bridge shingles also generate fewer GHG emissions.

How to Install Wakefield Bridge Shingles

Gather the necessary material.

  • Necessary materials: Electric screwdriver, metal shears, tape measure, screw/tool-pouch apron (nails), rubber mallet, sheet metal locking pliers.

  • For your security, you’ll also need: Protective work gloves to appropriately secure materials to the roof, a safety harness, knee pads, good security goggles, a hard hat, and safety footwear with rubber soles.

Remove or repair damaged asphalt shingles and install the sealing membrane.

Wakefield Bridge steel shingles are fitted from left to right, starting with a full panel on the first row followed by 2/3 and 1/3 panels to initiate the second and third rows respectively.

When installing plumbing, vents, or a roof-mounted hydraulic mast, once the steel shingles are in place, cut the Dektite to size and slide it over the pipe. Secure the Dektite’s base with a sealant (between the base and the roof).

Wakefield Bridge Roofing Care & Maintenance

  • Never step on any of the joints of your steel roof.

  • To prevent scratching the steel shingles’ paint, ensure your rubber footwear is clean and devoid of pebbles/debris before walking on the roof.

  • Every year, call in a professional to inspect and remove any and all debris.
