Your bedroom is the heart of your personal space; a place where you can relax, unwind, and clear your mind. As one of the few rooms where you can experience true peace and quiet, one must consider how important it is to feel comfortable in this space. Start with your bedroom walls, and play off the surrounding features in your room as they’re often telling on how you can design and create a relaxing and enjoyable setting.

How to Design or Style an Empty Bedroom Wall: 7 Simple Yet Clever Ideas

1- A bookcase-turned-headboard for a master bedroom

Are you an avid reader or hungry for knowledge? If so, then laying your head at night under a collection of the classics is probably your idea of perfection. Having a bookcase instead of a headboard makes for a stunning option to design a bedroom accent wall.

You can build your own shelves using reclaimed materials, industrial pipes, or newly purchased wood. Another way to go about it is finding a big or aesthetically pleasing bookcase, securing it to the wall behind your headboard and pushing your bed up against it. For those lacking in the space department, this option might be more space-efficient. Moreover, if you’re looking to change it up next year, you can always move your bookcase to another room.

2- A textured and upholstered accent headboard

Although this idea isn’t groundbreaking by anyone’s standards, textured accent walls are often overlooked in favour of non-contrasting walls. However, upholstery can revamp just about any bedroom, adding a sophisticated and whimsical aspect to an otherwise plain-looking setting.

This look can be mimicked using plywood, screws, a staple gun, and the fabric of your choosing. Project costs are dependent on fabric selection. A soft and cozy fabric will foster a romantic and warm feeling in any room, but especially in a master bedroom!

3- Picture frames mounted over a pretty wall paint colour

This bedroom wall project can be completed using one big frame, or several smaller ones hung in close proximity. Picture frames are incredibly versatile, so whichever way you choose to go about it works! Leave the frames devoid of any art or photos, allowing the wall colour behind to take over, or create a collage using random art, family photos, and pressed flowers. This headboard option is quite clever as it's perfectly convertible, and we know better than most that everyone's taste changes over time!

4- An elegant and creative DIY decor idea

Are you dreaming of customizing your bedroom to perfectly reflect your aesthetic and style? Take a deep dive into a world filled with creativity and originality with a DIY headboard, designed with geometric shapes. And, best of all, the creation process is just as pleasing as the final product itself. Explore your creative and artistic side by choosing shapes, sizes, and colours that suit your vision. Also, note that a headboard makes for an adorable decorative feature if you choose to switch it out in a few year’s time.

5- A headboard made with upcycled wood

For those who are working on a tight budget and can’t afford to purchase a brand-new, good-quality wooden headboard, upcycling materials to design something beautiful is all the rage right now, making for a statement piece that exudes vintage charm. Moreover, reclaiming alternative items to DIY non-traditional bedroom wall art is also as trendy as ever. Give your hand at assembling old wooden slats to create original shapes and patterns. Even an old door, repainted or varnished, can work wonders. Take a trip to your go-to hardware store and see what you can get your hands on!

6- A modern, concrete headboard

Contemporary concrete headboards have become a staple of modern and minimalist aesthetics. Design a headboard based on a geometric structure that will frame your bedroom elegantly.

Creative possibilities are practically endless: add subtle shelves, niches for decorative items, or even LED lights to create a modern and soothing atmosphere. A modern concrete headboard is much more than a functional structure, it makes for a space to express one's individual style while adding personal touches, here and there, like artwork and decorative trinkets.

7- An exposed brick wall look for the bedroom

Living in a fancy New York loft isn’t in the cards for everyone. However, if you’re quite taken with the industrial aesthetic, or the idea of a New York City-inspired bedroom, and want to recreate a similar effect, you can easily do so yourself. There are so many fun ways for you to mimic the look of exposed brick, but the simplest method is using a brick stencil.

Stencils are beyond straightforward to use; you solely need to pay close attention to detail and be willing to paint. If you’d rather not use a paintbrush, red brick-look wall coverings come in wallpaper form and wall panelling. Both can be purchased in hardware stores and hung with wallpaper glue (temporary or other).

Gypsum brick—a detailed faux brick made with stucco or drywall joint compound—makes for an alternative option. Lastly, note that brick veneers make for standalone bricks as opposed to panels, and are better suited for homeowners rather than tenants.

Lastly, bear in mind that said brick alternatives come in a slew of different colours, making for additional flexibility and allowing you to blend your faux brick wall with your preferred colour scheme.
